Serenity Now

So I think I have decided to change my approach to these blog posts. Instead of trying to stay chronological, I am just going to post things as they enter my mind and return from my memories.

This is a story of a song I wrote titled All There Is. This is one of the only songs I have where I am not playing guitar, but rather a very simple piano piece. I wrote the lyrics as I was sitting in a little rental house in Point Arena. We go to Mendocino every year for our anniversary and this year in particular we thought we would branch out and stay somewhere south of town and get a different perspective. The house we stayed in was on the point where the lighthouse stood and we were in the Keepers Quarters (Or something like that. It was basically where the person who ran the lighthouse, lived). It had a charm to it for sure. So one morning while I was drinking my coffee and while Heather was in the shower, I sat and wrote these lyrics that were inspired by my view of the ocean and the serenity of the moment. Again, there are very few lyrics, but I am proud of this as a song and a simple poem.

The lyrics are as follows:

The wind blows soft across the bluffs
And the water fools me as I look for the whales (a nod to the white caps in the water)
This place is more than enough
And the beacon above me (the lighthouse), tells it’s tales.

Is this all there is? I’m satisfied
Is this all there is? Then count me in

As for the stark recording of just the piano and my voice, it is a bit of a nod to one of my favorite bands, Blue October. They did a secret track on one of their albums and a song called It’s Just Me. While this song doesn’t come close to the passion he sings on that one, I wanted to capture every little breath and background noise on the track. If you listen with headphones, I think you will hear it a bit.

Here is the Blue October song:
